(in the late Pleistocene Epoch) human beings began to live and
descend in this area In 1398 , in order to defend the aggression
from the pirates along the coast, a "smoke platform" was built
here to give local people a warning signal , from which Yantai
got its name(The characters of "Yan" and "Tai" mean "smoke"

of the unfair treaty signed between the Qing Court and the French
government in Tianjin , Dengzhou(the old name of a city near
Yantai , now under the administration of Yantai) was opened
a trade port, and three years later moved down to Yantai Till
now, Yantai has a history of over 130 years since it became
a city. Loated at the eastmost part of
Shandong Peninsular, bordering the Yellow Sea and the Bohai
Bay , Yantai overlooks Japan and Korea across the ocean. It
is one of the earliest 14 coastal cities opening to the outside
world, and plays an important role among a number of cities
along the Bohai Bay economic circle , |
